For people living on Vancouver Island, visiting and enjoying coastal places is an important element of their lives. Whether its heading out on a five day coastal trek in the Juan De Fuca Park or a having a quick surf session at Jordan River, the coast makes living on the island super special. The ability to access coastal places is a critical element of enjoying them. The Surfrider Foundation views beach access as a universal right. Around the world Surfrider Foundation works to secure universal, low-impact beach access for all people. The Vancouver Island chapter strongly supports this policy and is continually striving to increase public awareness about public beach access in coastal communities on Vancouver Island.
For the past two years the Vancouver Island chapter has held the PADDLE OUT FOR PUBLIC ACCESS to celebrate and raise awareness about public beach access. 2011 marks the 3rd annual event. This is an opportunity for surfers, stand-up paddlers, kayakers and other coastal water enthusiasts to get together, hangout and show their appreciation for our coastal places by all paddling out into the ocean together. The event is fun for the whole family. There will be a BBQ, music, pre-paddle yoga session, and several fun contests.
