Privatization - our approach

Document Actions
We do not approach privatization as a political issue; we view it as a matter of public policy that's central to our mission of sustainable land reform and an active citizenry.

Dogwood Initiative is not a political organization. And we know that few people agree on the perfect government. But our work across BC has taught us that most British Columbians agree that some things belong in the government sphere, not in private hands.

That's why almost all the land in BC is Crown land, managed by the government for public benefit. It's why certain essential services (e.g. fire, police, social services) are run by government. And it's why the government regulates industry. Private interests must not override the public interest.

There is always pressure, for ideological and financial reasons, to privatize public lands, assets and services. While a case can be made for the outsourcing of some functions of government or selling some lands and assets, we believe the first consideration must be the public interest. All too often, as with much of the privatization we are seeing in BC, the public interest is ignored.

We are responding to your call for a way to uphold the principle that the public interest should be the first principle of government when making decisions about lands and people. The BC4Sale project is our attempt to create a forum for you to share your views on privatization, and to take action for positive change.

"It is the political will of the people that makes and sustains the political will of governments."
