One of our successes in building communities is the BC Community Forests Association.
After some successful campaigns to protect public lands, Dogwood Initiative focused more on community forestry.

After consulting key community forest leaders in 2001 and 2002, we realised a provincial voice for community forestry interests was needed.

Dogwood Initiative helped convene these leaders to prepare for the launch of a new provincial voice.

In March 2002, the British Columbia Community Forest Association (BCCFA) formed. Its goals are to:

  1. Create a unified voice on community forest issues;
  2. Promote legislative changes that would facilitate broader community forest success; and,
  3. Act as a network through which to share experiences, provide mutual support and co-ordinate the provision of extension services.
With funds we helped raise, the BCCFA hired a part-time staff person, has developed policy responses to key issues, and continues to advocate for community forests.

The Association has a key role to play in both informing policy change and in providing support to communities on the ground. As we increase the number and size of community forests across the province, the Association will help a nascent movement to grow into a vibrant force for communities and a sustainable future.
