Oil Interests vs. Our Interests
A Globe and Mail story this morning announced that Chinese, Korean, and other oil companies are close to signing commitments to Enbridge's Northern Gateway project.
Said Bank of Montreal Chief Economist Sherry Cooper yesterday: “We must export oil to China...the sooner the better...For sure, the U.S. isn't going to like it...But that's good, because it gives us more leverage with the U.S...it makes it more difficult for the U.S. to threaten us with comments about dirty oil.”
I for one don't appreciate British Columbia's salmon rivers and coasts being traded for "leverage" that the oil industry can use to fight progressive climate change legislation!
Neither did thousands of other people in this province and across Canada: In response to this story British Columbians and Canadians sent in over 12,000 individual e-letters to representatives and companies in Alberta's oil patch!

I am entirely opposed to oil tankers off B.C.'s coast. It is inevitable that there will be an oil spill at some future time that will have devastating effects on our already beleaguered wildlife, salmon and other fish stocks. Our scenery is a very valuable asset and we should do our best to enhance it, not destroy it.
