The man behind the viral video 'This is not an Enbridge animation'

Problems seeing the video? Try watching "This is not an Enbridge animation" on vimeo. A video by Shortt and Epic Productions.

Last Saturday, Dave Shortt emerged from 10 days of filming in the northern B.C. bush, found a wi-fi connection at the Kitimat library and happened upon a story online about Enbridge being criticized for deleting islands in the Douglas Channel from a video animation.

“I had this eureka moment,” Shortt says. The 38-year-old filmmaker had been filming along Enbridge’s proposed pipeline route with an eye to putting together a five-minute video to help raise awareness about the areas at risk and encourage people to sign Dogwood’s petition at notankers.ca.

“The plan was to film for another week or two but then I read the story about omitting the islands and I realized that’s what the video should be about,” he said on Wednesday afternoon from his camper van parked outside the Prince Rupert Safeway store. “It’s about trying to bring some reality to what’s at risk.”

Shortt knew the media interest in the missing islands would pass quickly, so he needed to get the video posted pronto. “It was 10 in the morning, but I still needed to finish filming because I didn’t have the shots of Kitimat yet,” Shortt says.

He quickly got the shots he needed, then headed back to the Kitimat library where he spent four hours editing the video — but then he hit a road block. “I had to sit as close to the wireless internet as possible, but it wasn’t suitable for uploading or transferring data. I realized it was going to be like three hours,” Shortt says.

While he battled with the wi-fi, Shortt’s friend asked the librarian if she knew anywhere with fast Internet in town and she recommended the rec centre. And that’s how it came to be that Shortt launched his soon-to-be-viral video into the world from the lobby of the Kitimat Rec Centre — humble beginnings for 100 seconds of footage that have been viewed more than 34,000 times in four days, driven 4,500 new signatures to the No Tankers petition and drawn the attention of the Huffington Post, Toronto Star, Vancouver Province and Canada AM.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Shortt says. “Being available for media interviews has basically been a full-time job for the past few days.”

He’s landed at least one new contract for his video production company Shortt and Epic and has received messages from people he hasn’t heard from for 20 years. “A lot of people have been thanking me — strangers. The ones that mean the most are the people from the areas where I filmed,” he says. “I received a message today saying: ‘You’ve changed my mind on the issue, I live a mile down from where you filmed in Burns Lake.’ ”

Despite all the success, Shortt still has a laundry list of ways he’d like to improve the video. “There are probably locations along the pipeline that are even more spectacular, but I was somewhat limited in where I could get to,” he explains. “The first location was challenging . . .  It basically required that we bushwhacked through forest until we found the lake, carrying a lot of equipment.”

It’s been a wild ride for someone who shies away from the spotlight (“I’m much more comfortable behind the camera.”), but it’s been well worth it: “It’s been quite the adventure. I’m so glad I did it,” Shortt says.

Hundreds of British Columbians have taken on the No Tankers mission and are using their talents to spread the word in their communities. If you want to do more to protect B.C.’s coast, check out our Find Allies kit.

They look like nothing more than contrails spread out by the upper level winds.

gina says:

i see them everyday now.... do you know if there are any petitions? it will not look like this again, the chemtrails are killing all living things on earth....

Allan Winks says:

Chem trails?? Those are condensation trails from high altitude jet aircraft. I know, I spent my life making them.

Gery says:
Sep 17, 2012 02:40 PM

No Allan, you didn't. Contrails, indeed, from flights from Edmonton to Azerbaijan I suppose. You must know those are not contrails. From the experiments in Shasta Lake, it is quite probably nano aluminum oxides/sulphides that are weakening our forests to the point where the parasitic invasions like spruce budworm finish them off. A brilliant video with the most important story of all within the story.

Andrea says:
Sep 18, 2012 08:40 PM

I find it funny that in a video about legitimate issues and pending danger, people are obsessed with the conspiracy of chem trails. Why can't people focus on issues that are legitimate and proven, and can be fixed?

I noticed the chem-trails and was a bit shocked. Other than that congratulations Dave Shortt and your people that assisted in any way. People will unite around these sort of simple truths in picture format especially when we have already been shocked by scenes of oil soaked coastlines and birds. I have a suggestion get some one with a plane to fly you over all 1170 miles of the route plus the tankers proposed routes.

Jo Anne says:
Sep 16, 2012 03:58 PM

That's a great idea! I think video footage of the flight along the tanker route would make the most impact.

SparkyDon says:
Sep 16, 2012 10:03 PM

Great idea to fly over and film all 1170 miles of the proposed route for the pipeline. People need to see just what is at stake. Words and numbers just do not register like pictures of our prestine country.

Rick says:

Yes a fly over but also remember it is the Ocean that is most threatened as far as I am concerned.

Why are these people determined to destroy Gods Country and gift to us all.
Well done to David Shortt for his wonderful video it will help people to understand first hand what is at stake. When someone carries out such a cover up, i.e. taking out the islands from the map, it is clear they are some one who cannot be trusted under any circumstances. They have no respect or regard for everyone and are determined to ride rough shod over us all but they made one big mistake we are going to stop them
Prayer will not go amiss here. God always answers prayer so hands together everyone.!

There are also a lot of BC residents, myself included, who have vowed to stand in front of the bulldozers, should it get that far. I would only hope that Alberta and the Feds will find an alternative way -- both in sending the substandard bitumen east as well as reducing its production.

Doug says:
Sep 16, 2012 01:39 PM

It's funny how this Enbridge thing and other such devastating projects within our province are left to the First Nations to squash. I remember a few years back how everybody was against the First Nations land claims. It now seems to be our saving grace as we (referring to everyone else other than First Nations people) seem so helpless. Politicians will not listen to us, we are just over the top radicals. The First Nations have the real power. I trust they will do what is right.

i dont know how to do this but if someone could make a film about an oil spill in the area proposed for the tankers passage and demonstrate how the currents and tides would take the oil into and arounf the islands and the coast-a visual would create suchga strong impact-

Chris Armstrong says:
Sep 16, 2012 06:13 PM

NEVER GET COMPLACENT! Although Enbridge's 10-year pipeline track record proves beyond all question their ingrained corporate INCOMPETENCE, and they lie and treat us like idiots; Big Oil has great patience, very deep pockets, a longterm big (mostly hidden) agenda, and big supporters in Big Government. The NGP/Northern Gateway Pipeline carrying very highly abrasive "dilbit" would be a guaranteed disaster for British Columbia! None of the buyers care a wit about BC, its environment, or its future generations. They want our resources, period! We should refine the dilbit in Canada, close to the source, and sell a much higher value product to the world, possibly even involving MUCH LOWER RISK pipelining. That is where Big Oil can put their money.

Alley Hensler says:
Sep 16, 2012 06:21 PM

Kudos to David Shortt!!! People need to see what the reality is & realize what will be lost if we allow Enbridge to go ahead!!! Thanks for doing such an awesome job in making people more aware!!! It is our responsibility to retain our natural resources & the planet in general for future generations!!! <3

Brian says:
Sep 16, 2012 06:39 PM

As Bob says, those are contrails. In and of themselves a blight on the stratosphere and, as is known, airline travel adds a considerable amount to our CO2 emissions. We don't need "Chemtrail" conspiracy theorists muddying the waters. All sensible opponents to the pipeline are attempting to base our objections to real science and natural science and biology in particular.

Edwin Headwind says:
Sep 16, 2012 06:39 PM

Wow, what great filming!! My eyes are watering. Nature is more wonderfull than ANYTHING yet created by humans - being there is even better than watching this film.

On the other hand the Tar Sands, oil spills, and ugly behemoth tankers are also real.

Lets not let Gateway become a reality.

I hope this pipeline is never constructed. I am speaking against it at the 'review panel'. As I love nature I am worried to see it all made dirty & full of toxins. As capitalist I also worry my waterfront property in Vancouver worthless if oil spill occurs due to increased tanker travel in the inlet resultant from this pipeline. Nobody wants to live next to dirty smelly dead water.

Darcy says:

Mark_BC says:
Sep 16, 2012 10:10 PM

One aspect that isn't getting the attention it deserves is the fact that the world is at Peak Oil. We are running out, and the Alberta oil sands is arguably the largest single deposit left in the world. Yet, it represents only 6 years of global oil consumption. China knows this and that's why it has bought a lot of Alberta oil rights, and that is one of the big pushes trying to ram this pipeline through. Withouth this pipeline, it can't get the oil it wants (China imports over half its oil, just like the US). China wants OUR resources! And our corrupt bought-off politicians are all too eager to offer them up. Unless we as a nation stand up to the abuses of power that are systematically dismantling our sovereignty. This resource belongs to us, not to communist China.

I have been embarking on a kayak trip up the coast of BC to document the wildlife and threats it (we) face.

Thank you for this video. We have lost site of our connectedness to all of creation and sold our souls for profit. The Creator gave us Mother Earth to feed and support all her children, not to batter her, destroy her for the sake of profit. Jobs and economic growth that comes from destroying Mother Earth is not growth; it is spiritual suicide. It is time we all stand together as one and see no matter what our color race creed, we are one with Mother Earth. it is time to act like respectful children not spoiled brats.

I have travelled Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert. I have sailed through Grenville Channel and Douglas Channel. I have seen the navigation charts of the area which show the many rocks and rocky islands. The country is beautiful and magnificent. Since many petroleum compounds are carcinogens, the proposed pipelines are two huge tubes of poison, dangerous to all living things. And the bitumen with dilutants has some of the properties of road oil used for "cold mix" paveing. When mixed with gravel and spread for paving, the lighter petroleum fraction evaporates, leaving the heavier asphalt. The dilutant in the pipeline mixture will carry a spill into the ground and then evaporate, essentially paving the area covered by the spill. A spill of the dilutant will be a fire or explosion hazard. We cannot afford this pipeline or the tankers.

Barb says:
Sep 17, 2012 11:01 AM

Fabulous footage! It brings tears to my eyes to thinks of the devastation that will occur if the pipeline goes through. We need to get people in government who have consciences. Our taxes pay their salaries and more of us need to get out and vote.

I think someone should do a Documentary (how about David Suzuki?) about the future - about the land along the Enbridge Line if it is completed and several oil spills have occurred - along some of the more important areas: the Interior passage; one of the salmon-bearing big rivers, etc. How about a Spirit Bear all covered in oil?
I was told some-one was working on it, but I haven't seen or heard anything yet - it is time that it surfaced!

I remember playing/swimming in Bear lake in my youth, catching tadpoles and when I saw that frog it all came flashing back..I couldn't stop crying on the thought of other children will never have that experience there. This pipeline will be a horrendous crime against nature, it will go through unless we unite. How do we get these other non-destructive resources off the ground so this is not even an issue any more!
Remember many little fish can take over the one big fish ;)

Thank you Mr. Shortt! Well done. The chemtrail photo is brilliant and makes it abundantly clear they spray in even the most remote regions. Enbridge is just one small part of an enormous iceberg. Look up folks...those are not any type of cloud in any weatherman's text book. No pilot has ever left a contrail that lasts all day to spread and descend like legs of a centipede. Look up and start asking questions.

I see all the comments and agree with most. the one thing I keep seeing i how people think its only the FIRST NATIONS people that have the power to be heard....that is the whole problem.....we dont believe in what god gave us.....life. We are all made equally...our creator never made goverments and countries with borders....this ALL OUR doing. Infact the bible strictly prohibits any governing entity on earth but our creator....we appointed them...and we have the power to remove them.....but it takes EVERYONE to not sit on their couch and let the First Nations handle it...could you imagine what our country and relations with each other would be if we joined together in mass to do something we all are finding impossible....Im looking at Carols comment above....little fish can take out the big fish...WE are the big fish...not them...they are few and we are many....never would this stuff fly in a foriegn country...people there...rich and oor alike join together to fight their govs and win...why...cuz they are willing to get of the couch and stick to their agenda and actually be willing to die for what they believe....we should be no different...imagine a hundred thousand people showing up at first pipe drop.....they couldnt deal with it.....thats what Im saying...we have the power we just need recognise and take action. Its our world....god gave it to us....and its up to us to look after it....not just for ourselves....bvut for every future generation. Lets take back our god given rights and show them how to make the world a place everyone can be proud of....it is possible.

The Northern Gateway Pipeline oil spill threat is only one of the serious, nature-disrespecting aspects of the fossil fuel industry. As horrifying as a dilbit leak is, the worst harm from this pipeline from the Tar Sands to the world is the use of the product it delivers! Fossil fuels have been scientifically-condemned as a cause of deadly Climate Change for three decades (The U.N. negotiated an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 1992 – there must have been substantial evidence for several years to create that consensus). Mr. Harper and the “Carbon Barons” want us to forget this. Already, weather is destabilizing dangerously. Ecological damage is accelerating. Sea level is rising. We must stop that out-dated pipeline and the Tar Sands and press hard for an urgent ramping up of alternative energies and energy conservation strategies! Oil, coal and gas worked fine for a few hundred years to build civilization but are now obsolete because they are dangerously undermining our “life support system”, nature!
