Harper Avoids the Question

I was among the few Canadians to have my question on global warming answered by the Prime Minister, and I would like to share my thoughts.

On the issue of Global Warming Canada has been shown to be lacking on all the fronts that Stephen Harper mentioned.

  •  Internationally we are known for reneging on our Kyoto protocol agreements and obstructing climate change negotiations.
  • Continentally the Harper Government has abdicated all responsibility for addressing climate change and relied on a dysfunctional US political system to ensure that nothing is done.
  • Nationally the Harper Government has let oil sands interests drive policy. He is gutting environmental regulations and supporting the expansion oil sands pipelines and an oil tanker port on our pacific coast. We continue to see our heat trapping carbon emissions rise and none of the measures that Harper mentioned will counter this.

Our status as an "emerging energy superpower" could give us increased clout on the international stage. Combined with Canada's historical moral authority our influence could contribute positively to addressing Global Warming. Sadly our government has chosen to do the opposite.

Harper's stock answers on every issue left me with no confidence that he is willing to genuinely engage with the publics concerns. On the contrary, combined with his government's avoidance of the media, the YouTube Q&A seems calculated to give the impression of accessibility without the inconvenience of pesky follow up questions you could expect in a real town hall. His communication style says little more than "go back to sleep, this issue is too complicated for you, we're dealing with it."

While I support the concept of unmediated access to our political leaders the staged and scripted nature of Harper's responses made his YouTube experiment a failure. I hope Canadians were not fooled.

It was my understanding, the Aboriginal People paid for, an extensive study to be done about, the pipeline and oil tanker ships. It is not if, there would be a spill, it is a matter when. The Valdez spill is still in evidence. This is dirty oil being piped into these tankers. So much for Campbell's green policies. Campbell is a dictator, so it doesn't matter what the rest of the citizens in this province protest, Campbell does it anyway, with Harper's support. Canada's Constitution is no longer honored. Nor, are out Civil Rights and Liberties. Democracy and freedom are null and void. We, rely on our Aboriginals, to save what they can from Campbell. He was even going to open hunting, of the Spirit Bear. There is nothing safe from Campbell, nothing sacred to him, except money and his greed.

The ordinary citizens of Canada, saw a long time ago, Harper and Campbell, are best buddies. No matter how badly Campbell is destroying BC, Harper approves, of every underhanded deal Campbell and Hansen have pulled. Harper, Iggy, Campbell and Hansen, each and everyone of them lied about the HST. Campbell used every dirty tactic in the book, to ensure he was re-elected. Harper, shuts down parliament, for absolutely nothing. Western Canadians, feel no sense of government from Harper. It is said, a country is judged by the way they treat their aged. It is very obvious, Campbell and Harper, have no concern for their pensioners. BC, has the highest number of homeless pensioners in Canada. Harper and Campbell's budgets, did absolutely nothing for these seniors. Even now, they are getting their utilities cut off, they are being evicted because, they can't afford their rent. Campbell's budget is a nightmare, and the HST on top of that, means the number of homeless seniors, is going to double. Canadians, have no sense of security with, our governing bodies. What citizens have is, lies, deceit, broken promises and unfair taxes, and many more unjust actions against them. Why, do Banks, oil and gas company's and big businesses get millions of dollars from the government. The only explanation found was, those company's have the big bucks to, back the political party that benefits them the most.

I live in Ontario, and we feel just as cursed with having Harper on his make-believe throne/potty, as the western provinces. He only deals with big dirty corporations (part of the reason he desperately wanted to skip COP),and I'm sure it crossed his mind 'What's in it for me?'. So, if it doesn't fit into his agenda, he's not interested. Certainly sounds like dictatorial thinking to me. We are pressing for an election call. Enough with the lies, deceit, and dismantling Canada.
