Defend Our Coast actions to roll out across province

By now, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Defend Our Coast rally happening in Victoria on Oct. 22nd — but what if you don’t live in Victoria? Or what if you’d prefer to target your MLA instead of the provincial government at large?

Well, Dogwood Initiative is helping organize an unprecedented day of action in communities across the province two days later on Wednesday Oct. 24th. Why? First, we know there are thousands of No Tankers supporters outside of the Victoria region who want to take action (more than 30 communities have already signed up) and second, our voices are particularly powerful at the local level. If you live outside of B.C., don’t worry, we’ll be in touch soon about other opportunities to take action.

Increasingly, there is a need to shine the spotlight on B.C.’s individual Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), especially as next year’s provincial election ticks closer. There is a developing risk that B.C.’s two major political parties are settling into their current party positions with respect to oil tanker proposals. The B.C. Liberals have their five conditions and the B.C. NDP oppose Enbridge but will not comment on Kinder Morgan. Therefore, more needs to be done at the level of individual electoral districts, engaging our local MLAs.

The actions on Oct. 24th are just the beginning of what will be a sustained effort to help you persuade your provincial MLA to do more to protect our rivers and coast, leading up to next year’s provincial election. Importantly, the events on the 24th will be simple and fun and will send the signal to our provincial politicians that we are organizing in their communities.

Email is more personal and less annoying than FB. We can make it easy for friends and relatives to find their event.

This is the MOST IMPORTANT issue for us living on our fabulous B.C coast for today and even more important, our children yet to explore and enjoy our natural beautiful environment before it is taken away. I encourage to be there and count on Oct 24th.

Fantastic, this should make a powerful statement to the goons that want to push this through. Let's try to make it so they can see it from space, like the great wall of China.

I'm a New Brunswicker and love BC. If it comes to it I will come to BC to lock arms with natives and other supporters to stop the destroyers of our planet.
Why are so many willing to die for their country but not their planet?

I say, "if the United States wants the oil then they can da-- well pipe it and ship it on their own land, see how fast that proposal would be sent to the "0" file. I am as guilty as all others whom drive a vehicle, heat our homes with fossil fuel etc. etc. but let's face it...where the processing is now should be where it stays (but environmentally upgraded to make production safest".)

Analogy: If a wheat farmer carefully supervises his wheat fields and takes all health problems seriously (and applies them) he/she produces a safe, consistent product we all trust...oil companies should do the same, Whatever the financial cost!!!

elizabeth may has released the list of rivers and lakes that are protected and the number is 62 rivers and 93 lakes. notably absent are the stikine, nass and skeena. check out the list as below. this, along with the chinese sell out, seems treasonous and dangerous.

In Bill C-38, Stephen Harper gutted environmental laws brought in by Brian Mulroney. Now he has gone after environmental laws brought in by Sir John A. Macdonald.

Bill C-45, a second Act to Implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 29, 2012 and other measures, the Conservatives’ latest omnibus bill, has weakened Canadians’ historic right to navigate the lakes, rivers, and streams of Canada without being impeded by pipelines, bridges, power lines, dams, mining and forestry equipment, and more.

The Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA) of 1882, considered Canada’s first environmental law, has been changed – to the Navigation Protection Act. If a body of water is not mentioned in Schedule 2 on page 424, it will no longer be covered under the NWPA permit process from the rampant resource development being advocated by the Harper Conservatives.

“This is nothing less than tragic for the majority of Canadians who love and respect our waterways from coast to coast to coast,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, MP Saanich-Gulf Islands. “Even rivers like the Margaree River in Cape Breton, a National Heritage River, will no longer be covered by the NWPA. The only river listed in the entire Yukon is the Yukon River.

“Our inland harbours, including Shoal Harbour in my riding, and gulfs, including the Gulf of St. Lawrence, will be vulnerable.”
