Central Saanich Approves Urban Sprawl

This week Central Saanich Council approved Ian Vantreight's plan to build a luxury subdivision on rural and agricultural land.  Watch this video to hear about the implications this will have for our community and to learn about what you can do to stop this from happening.

The mayor of Central Saanich council recused himself from voting because of his business dealings with the Vantreights. Those council members who received election funding from the Vantreights ought to have done the same. So much for the democratic process that resulted in the development of the OCP and Regional Growth Strategy, using countless hours of study and consultation, not to mention the dollars spent. It seems that a few rural councillors need to be reminded that they are still accountable to the community at large -- and since their municipality's OCP is supposed to be consistent with the larger Regional Growth Strategy, this community extends to all of us who live within the region.

Make no mistake - this is Susan Mason's development. She was the one person who could have turned this vote around, but she did not. Instead, she broke her election promises to this District, defied our Official Community Plan, the Regional Growth Strategy, and Central Saanich Staff advice, and she supported those whose campaigns were paid for in large part by Vantreight: Kubek, Siklenka.

May the District of Central Saanich lose this battle in the Supreme Court - SOUNDLY - and may a non-corrupt government be elected next time around.

OATH OF OFFICE
CANADA )
PROVINCE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA)
I, Alastair Bryson , do solemnly affirm that:
I am qualified to hold the office of Councillor for the District of Central Saanich to which I
have been elected;
I have not, by myself or any other person, knowingly contravened the Local Government
Act respecting vote buying or intimidation in relation to my election to the office;
I will faithfully perform the duties of my office and will not allow any private interest to
influence my conduct in public matters;
as required by the Community Charter, I will disclose any direct or indirect pecuniary
interest I have in a matter and will not participate in the discussion of the matter and will
not vote in respect of the matter.
SWORN by the above named Councillor
before me at Saanichton,
British Columbia...

The above is a copy of the oath of office councillors had to swear to prior to taking office. I would like to point out the following portion of this oath; I will faithfully perform the duties of my office and will not allow any private interest to
influence my conduct in public matters. Obviously this portion of the oath means nothing to certain councillors when dealing with the Vantrieght proposal. Maybe The Attorney General, The Minister of Community & Rural Development, and Chief Electoral Office should review these councillors voting patterns as this is a definite violation of the Oath taken and their voting patterns have consistenly gone against the wishes of the ENTIRE community and staff advice.
