Privatization - Assets

A partial list of public assets and institutions the government is selling off:

  • the promise-breaking sale of BC Rail, and the secret nature of the real agreement deal (disguising a sale as a 90 year lease)
  • another broken promise: the sale of certain BC Hydro services to Accenture, as part of a secretly planned sell-off of the Crown corporation, piece by piece
  • rumours that the British Columbia Buildings Corporation, which owns and manages the facilities for government ministries and agencies, has been sold, or is in negotiations to be sold;
  • BC Ferries: from the suspicious sale of the Fast Cats at a deeply discounted price, to the semi-privatization of the ferries themselves: the first step, perhaps, toward full privatization
  • the sale of educational and ecological facilities such as the Crystal Gardens, often done indirectly, through political appointments to boards such as the Provincial Capital Commission
  • closure of schools and medical facilities, as part of what is shaping up to be the promotion of two-tiered education and medical systems; in other words, an assault on public education and medical care

... and don't forget, because the government hasn't forgotten:
  • the attempted sale of operation of the Coquihalla Highway, despite the terrible experience with highway privatization in places such as Ontario. Broad community activism stopped this folly, but look for the government to try to resurrect it, and to seek to privatize other highways
